Saturday morning and heading through the tunnel to a cheerful bramble work party in the cutting beyond the south portal. There's also a (shallow) flood there, slightly improved after some spadework. Something is blocking the tunnel drain though. The issue's logged with @sustrans.bsky.social.

The route remains closed at Devonshire Tunnel while works to address the flooding are completed. The reopening date has been set back and it's now expected that the tunnel will be reopened in mid to late January.

At Devonshire Tunnel, the route remains closed while the drainage works progress. Various pumping operations under way this morning, and a plume of condensate rising in the crisp air - the water from the tunnel drain giving the impression that you could boil an egg. (spoiler, nope.)

The “one tree is one tree too many” attitude is very good to see mind you. The level of irreversible damage NR allow to their structures by vegetation is scandalous.

Revisiting the other day, while it was cut, the stump wasn't killed so it survived and has regrown - and has been joined by another. Cherry picker time hopefully.

Welcome to our new followers here. If you encounter an issue with the route, please tell us, it helps. The photo below, from 2021, is of an old foe, this tree survived the route opening's heavy maintenance on Tucking Mill viaduct. We'll be paying it another visit: it's hopefully been removed.

We'll not be using our account on 'X' for the time being*. If you're after news from the route, you may well hear it here first. We're grateful to followers and supporters, new and old. *Very probably, we'll never use it again.

19th April 2024. Devonshire Tunnel has been reopened. It was closed on and off since January owing to groundwater flooding, which has now retreated. We don't expect it to be closed again for the time being.

For now, Devonshire Tunnel is closed by flooding, but this was the patient and good natured queue to go through the day the route opened, 11 years ago on Saturday 6th April 2013. Still grateful to our supporters and to those who came along that cold but sunny day.

Last week's photos - works to the trees in Lyncombe Vale., with the workforce sorting safe passage for people past the work site. Devonshire Tunnel is still closed by groundwater flooding, but the water levels (checked twice weekly) are currently falling slowly.

Here's the view from Maple Grove Bridge as the council sorts *that* puddle and the drain that crosses the track. Devonshire Tunnel remains closed too as the water levels... remain high. The blockage to the tunnel drain itself has not yet been tackled.
