Book #6: Lessons in Chemistry, pictured where I finished it: on the train home from Malaga. Really fun, once I got over the outrageous tragedy the author subjects our heroine to near the start! I enjoyed it so much I read the ending multiple times and thought of little else for days afterwards.

Just been catching the last gasp of summer with a trip (by rail of course) to Malaga. I thought I’d said goodbye to my summer clothes but it was 30 degrees in Malaga! The best part of rail travel is that this was also a holiday in Barcelona, Madrid and Girona 🇪🇸

Book no.5: Zero Altitude by Helen Coffey. I started it ages ago and finally read to the heart-warming end. This one’s a personal one for me: a travel writer I persuaded to quit flying with the @flightfreeuk.bsky.social challenge. Fabulous read from a wonderful travel writer - quite proud really.

I’m sure I’m not the only person who makes a NY resolution to read more. Failing miserably at the one-per-month aim - only four so far! But I have quite a few half-started, so I could still make it…

I didn't realise, it's #WorldMentalHealthDay. Tim was an absolute top bloke. Wise, funny, clever, passionate, and a bit silly. He was also extremely open and honest about his struggles. His story resonated with so many people. It's so important to speak about mental health, if only to help others.

It was #WorldSuicidePreventionDay2025 on Wednesday and I was thinking about Tim all day. If he were still here, Tim would surely have posted something honest and inspiring. I wanted to do the same but it's not so easy when your friend has gone. So instead here's just a lovely memory.

We’ve been craving a Sunday roast for the past three weeks, so now I’m back home here it is. And in honour of Tim there’s a full roast garlic bulb in there 🧄 (This is what vegans eat for Sunday roast: all the trimmings, plus a carrot and cashew nut roast)

Final leg of the journey home: Glasgow to London. The train line follows almost our exact route as far as Wigan: back through Carlisle, Penrith, Oxenholme, Lancaster, Preston… all places we rode. Strange to watch our journey flashing by in reverse.

I guess the purpose of me posting this is to say, even if the train says you can’t get on with your bike, you can usually find a way. I would advise everyone to learn how to dismantle their bike in case you need to for something like this!

Getting home is always the hardest part! I’m on a train to Inverness but there were no bike spaces available on this train, so here’s my bike, in pieces, on the luggage rack. I’ve covered the dirty bits with a bin bag. The train guard was friendly and had no problem with this.

One of the reasons I’ve spent an extra day in Thurso is to do Parkrun up here. I did Land’s End Parkrun on day 1, so here we are at the other end 🏃‍♀️‍➡️

I also won’t get to geeky about my kit/bike set up as that’s not important - take want you need, and ride what you have, BUT I have learned a few things about how to be comfy/cosy when camping throughout the years, so here’s what I carry:

People are asking about logistics of route etc. Tim always hated this question because planning a ride is a very individual thing, and half the fun is in planning it. But if others want to do something like this, which I would heartily recommend, here’s how it came about:

We have arrived! Lands End to John o’ Groats: 20 days, and over 1000 miles. This has been an epic adventure and a rightful tribute to our friend Tim. We all feel exhausted and emotional. A few tears were shed at the signpost.

Hurrah! From Mounts Bay on the south coast of England to Dunnet Bay on the north coast of Scotland.

Breakfast roll full to overflowing (I’ve dismantled it to eat it).

The NC500 is a difficult one. I adore Scotland, particularly the coastline, and I want others to experience it too (esp as an alternative to flying on holiday). But this single track road does feel a bit of a race track now. I counted 33 campervans yesterday in 2 hrs 😳
