A kid told me I was aura farming today while I was leaning up against a pole outside of the building reading texts. I laughed dismissively and said, “What are you talking about? I’m just catching up on texts …” And he says, “See! You’re doing it again!” And then I finally understood. lol

By the way, this whole episode is worthwhile for all educators — I spent a lot of this school year railing against CogSci bros, but Fisher articulated my actual gripe quite well throughout: It’s not the research that’s the problem, but people’s tendency to *overgeneralize* research.

I just stumbled upon this article after reading a blog post of the same name and it speaks to something I’ve felt deeply in my first year with a leadership title: we don’t do nearly enough to support, develop, and promote organic leaders in schools. And, of course, they’re exactly who schools need.

Here’s a perhaps controversial opinion: I agree that people accept the comfort of blindness in the absence of data. And grades are too uneven between schools to provide equity data. So yes, we need tools to shed light on inequity. AND…we really need something more imaginative than state testing.

This story is emblematic of so many cases of students/families at the margins of school districts being ignored/silenced/underserved because people assume they won’t push back. I’m glad this family did.

This is what our reading specialist and I have been grappling with: how often are we mistaking, “…the physiological symptoms of trauma for a lack of innate ability?”

A more general point related to this: Something I think some of the CogSci purists are way too dismissive of is that schooling occurs in a society that is openly hostile to entire groups of people. And if we’re openly ignoring *that* we aren’t actually helping Ss navigate the world.

This is something that I’ve prided myself on as an educator, but struggle to articulate. Far too often, “code switching” becomes a gateway to toxic respectability politics because people reject a student’s whole *identity* as inherently bad. Identity confluence is what we should be aiming for IMHO

I facilitate an assessment PLC for my school and we recently had a discussion about what exactly our grades should communicate. We discussed all the ins and outs of grading frameworks and then, mid-dialogue, someone blurts out, “Isn’t the problem just having a 100-point scale?” Bingo!

A couple incidents from this past week have me reflecting on criticisms of restorative justice practices. Something often missing from: parent trust & buy-in is essential. The biggest thing is making sure people feel heard while really pushing a distinction between “accountability” & “punishment”.

Bureaucracy and conflict have dominated my week. This episode was exactly what I needed to ground myself entering Friday. We have to center humanity. And remind others to do so when they lose sight of it.

HS ball without a shot clock is awful. I played HS ball in CA just before the shot clock era. Games where teams held the ball for the last few minutes of a close game were excruciating — and I was on the winning side of my share of them so I’m as guilty as anyone! That is exactly right. And it’s completely irresponsible to report about declining enrollment in schools without mentioning the full context.

Truly hope we can put this Kuminga story to bed now. Neither he nor the Warriors emerged from that mess victorious — it was a bad situation and a bad fit that began with a poor management decision to draft him. I hope he finds the right situation — and maybe it’s ATL! — but let’s move on.

After helping a student with an Alg 2 problem (😰) yesterday, he asked for some motivation to keep going. I did my teacherly thing and he said, “That’s not the motivation I wanted, but it’s exactly what I needed.” And I can think of few better ways to sum up the affective work of HS teachers.
