Yesterday was my first experience with AI slop contaminating my search to the extent that I was not able to resolve my question (in the time I had). I was looking for a naan bread recipe and found only incoherent, implausible or recipes lacking a ingredient list - but with many "beautiful" words.

I haven't been #lichen posting for a while and now I am back with a question (I should not touch sterile crusts…) This one is from silicous boulders in a small forest creek 480m asl. Grey areolare crust with prominent green deliminated soralia. K-, C-, KC-, P-. UV white-ish.

Dendrospora tenella (I think) is my favourite Ingoldian spore #AquaticHyphomycetes.

My best microscope accessory acquired last year was an old dictation foot pedal with 3 buttons - bound to start/stop live view, add/remove scalebar and take photo. Makes going through the #AquaticHyphomycetes and #lichen samples much faster.

I dedicated the last evenings to #AquaticHyphomycetes and worked on the samples I took in Dec'25 in the Taunus. These were very common conidia - and I each time I look at them I come to a different conclusion. Lemonniera terrestris or Alatospora acuminata or something else? @fayrnhawk.bsky.social

I am playing around with the new macro setup, figuring out how to get lighting and positioning done. 20x is far too close for #lichen "identification" purposes, however it yields insights you cannot gain with a normal section.

Xanthocarpia cf. lacteoides (I think) #lichen on limestone. A sample I have worked on before. The black are pigmented algae overgrowing the yellow lichen thallus. Do you think it might be possible to capture released spores in macro? I think you can see the tips of asci/paraphyses.

The lichen Placynthium nigrum, the best I've ever seen. Found on limestone, both worked and natural. The blue colour is where the fungal hyphae have grown out without alga, making this an easy ID #lichen #lichenGBI

Cladonia pocillum (or Cladonia pyxidata f. pocillum) - I think - forming a distinct rosette on calcareous ground between grass and rocks.

I am still toying around with the image stacks from the Agonimia vouauxii #lichen. Rocking stereo with Zerene stacker - still some issues with the processing.

Springerle are the true lembas.

I have played around a little bit with cross eye stereo on high magnification macros taken from the A. vouauxii. In this case it adds both to my understanding the geometry of the lichen and my puzzlement - what are those white structures. I suspected some lint, but they seem fungal.

Baeomyces rufus (I think) #lichen from a wayside embankment in the forest. On loamy material over siliceous rock. I will need to sit down with this for an evening to be sure though as I have no first hand experience with this species. The short stalks of the apothecia to not show from this angle.

Less fancy than fencepost-top Cladonia is this fencepost Trapeliopsis (I think, likely T. flexuosa). I wonder if the apothecia belong to the #lichen or if some other ascomycete is sneaking in from below.

My #lichen excursion from yesterday did not yield many eye catching photos - I went to a small creek and looked for freshwater associated lichens. Mostly verrucaria and maybe something-something trapelia. Boring brown and grey crusts that probably do not excite many people.

Caldonia fimbriata on worked lignum; together with Parmelia sulcata #lichen. Feels a bit like a crowd pleaser ;-).

I am still working on my #lichen with white apothecia. Tobys suggestion Bacidina matches and I got some ideas, however I have not yet arrived at a firm conclusion. If it is a B then maybe a pale morph. I could not find any pigmented apothecia in the sample. However I got some new photos.

I found pins! Chaenotheca ferruginea #lichen (I think) with orange spots on the thallus. Very moist state.

Sarea resinae and S. difformis on dried pine sap.

Cladonia #lichen on moss. Wonder what this is, they are a bit more granular than I would like for C. fimbriata and the base seems to have some squamules.

While looking at the moss sample with the Bacidina(?) #lichen I found some structures I thought were pycnidia. The are not. Turns out they are perithecia of another lichen. With 2 muriform spores per ascus I think this is Agonimia, with small ap. and granulose thallus probably A. vouauxii (I think)

Vezdaea sp. (I think) #lichen under a Peltigera (rufescens, I think). Today on the proper #macrophotography setup (Olympus UPlanFL10x+Raynox DCR150).
