I have a gall like growth on a (fruiting) Physcia adscendens #lichen. Has anyone ever seen something like this?

Vezdaea leprosa #lichen - I think. At least it looks like the specimen I was shown on the last course by HB.

Today its Peltigera. I still don't like to ID them. Everything I touch keys out to be rufescens.

Pseudombrophila hepatica (Batsch) Brumm., my second ascomycete from my recent trip to the "Vorharz". Growing on rotting grass and droppings of (a small mammal?). Ascomycete identification is a whole new can of worms for me. This was also only possible with help from the pilzforum.eu.

Walking through late-fall high grass while the camera decided to fire a focus stack burst - processed while batch processing in Helicon focus.

With help from the Fungi forum (Pilzforum.eu) this yellow ascomycete has a name: Octospora coccinea. #FungiFriends www.octospora.de/Ococcinea.htm Now I just need to put a name on the moss 😱

Dorset UK - Didymellopsis collematum , perithecia lichenicolous on Collema tenax v. ceranoides. Asci to 100 x 15 µm, spores hyaline, 1-septate, 22-25(-27) x 5-7 µm. Abundant on drive where I park my car - a bit of thallus about the size of my thumbnail had possibly 50 perithecia on it! #lichenGBI

With careful examination I was able to capture the fleeting C+ red fitting to Micarea denigrata #lichen.

Micarea denigrata #lichen - I think. Conspicuously white tipped pycnidia and small apothecia on worked wood (fencing). The C-reaction is not behaving as I would like it (C-).

I was photographing a globular springtail (Dicyrtomina saundersi) in the garden, when a juvenile "elongate" springtail came scurrying into view. Remarkably, they're both reasonably in focus with this single shot. Two for the price of one! #collembola #mesofauna #macro #photograph

Tonight I tried to replicate the "on-slide" test for usnic acid published by B. McCune 2024 with adaptations. Results look promising - further evaluation is necessary. #lichen E. prunastri has a strong red reaction. Probably second compound reacting brown? P. grisea is negative. L. saligna + 1/

Lately we have been working on the interactions of #lichens and #mites. This has been super exciting and the first two publications with our findings are now out. Here a quick summary (thread).

I have a mystery #lichen I've been working on for the last 3 days and would love some input on. Its on unshaded mineral rich soil between Baeomyces rufus (sterile) and early colonizer moss on the edge of a earth heap. Small black apothecia on brown thallus. I am thinking Micarea sp.; however... 1/4

It’s always amazing to me that so many endangered species have the word “common” in their name. Really hammers home how quickly these conservation crises can arise. These animals were common as recently as when we were naming stuff!

I re-printed the ballstage base in TPU. PLA on PLA was too slippery. Also I bought some lead balls for ballast. The prototype is filled with sand which sometimes does not shift and the stage stays unstable. Eventually I want to cover the base in cork to pin samples. #3Dprint #microscopy

Some technicalities. I had good experience with Olympus compatible c-mount camera adapters from China/Aliexpress to build up confidence in "third party" optics. Now I have tried new eyepieces for my stereo microscope. A pair of 10x/25 to replace my 10x/22. These work well*

Placynthiella dasaea #lichen (I think). On lignum (broken fence in an old garden). In contrast to P. icmalea with soredia.

Agonimia tristicula #lichen on bryophytes over hard limestone. I still have to find this one with perithecia, my sample is unfortunately sterile.

I think this is Lecania erysibe #lichen on a limestone boulder. Some small yellow nightmare parasitizes on the green blastidiate crust (however I have not collected this one yet).

Tonight I am troubled by this Caloplaca sp. #lichen. K+ cortex. Short ellipsoid spores with wide septum (9,6-11 x 5,5-6,8 µm). In northern hessia on silicous rock with Trapelia sp. (I think) and others I don't know. Keying out I arrive at costal sp. which this is definitely not fitting.

Pigmented 2-celled ascospores with a black band over the septum points me towards Rinodina bischoffii - on limestone from the old quarry in northern Hessia I've visited this summer. #Lichen

I have no clue what I found here, on sandy soil (in shaded forest) between moss. Small round spherules, heavily melanized all throughout. Cut surface grainy. On microscopic view (squash) some oil bubbles and hyphae but no spores or other features I could identify. What is this?
