While I was looking for a flat or house to rent in #Lüneburg I took a break to gather some foam from the Ilmenau to look for #AquaticHyphomycetes. Its an incredibly rich sample that probably will take me several evenings to document and even more to figure out.

I (think I) found spores of 9 species of aquatic hyphomycetes in this sample. The main numbers were of Alatospora acuminata and Clavatospora longibrachiata with some others mixed in. Also some I have not seen before.

Sampling foam for #AquaticHyphomycetes is especially beautiful this morning.

I made a short video to demonstrate the preparation of a slide with an aquatic hyphomycete sample. Its fast and simple and I can do batches of preparations. #aquatichyphomycetes #microscopy Maybe someone is willing to narrate this? I am not good at voice overs.

My current favourite way of preparing slides of #Aquatichyphomycetes is by mounting in PVA/Glycerol/Lactic acid (with cotton blue) published by F. Schumm 1989. It detaches the preparation from microscopy and gives me the option to view slides again days later (or maybe weeks or months, we'll see).

More #Aquatichyphomycetes this evening: Tetracladium marchalianum and Alatospora acuminata.

Another spore from #Aquatichyphomycetes. I am having troubles narrowing this down. 4 arms from a central globose cell with a prominent scar. Maybe something somehting Porocladium aquaticum?

Tetrachaetum elegans - from a very saline creek in central hessia; fed by local mineral springs these slender and very elegant spores were quite common in this (foam) sample.

Porpidia tuberculosa #lichen on sandstone from the embankment I visited yesterday. Not as catchy as Cladonia but I like it nevertheless.

Bleak rocky meadow I was sitting on to look for lichens. I am very happy with macro with the OM-1 and 90mm M.Zuiko, especially for lichens. For anything else I have not yet got a good feeling, colours seem a bit off, detail is there but no good contrast. Any tips? #OMSystem #photography

Cladonia caespiticia and Trapeliopsis granulosa (I think) colonize this sandy embankment.

Cladonia caespiticia #lichen - covering large patches on a sandy wayside embankment. Tiny squamules forming mats on the soil. The decorticate podetia are short and do not rise (much) above the squamules. In this (dry) lichen they stay sunken a bit.

Fellow ex-scientists who left academia: How do you manage to stay somehow in some science-related field? I somehow don't seem to have a chance but that makes me unhappy on the way at some point...I feel so much like a complete failure, so many rejections. Any advice on how to shake that off?

Shot cups of Cladonia humilis #lichen (I think) hiding amongst moss.

Bizarrely formed podetia of Cladonia #lichen (I think C. rei, UV+ white) on a slope made of a mix of lignum and mineral soil in a disused gravel pit.

A small lobe of Peltigera rufescens (I think) with thickly tomentose upper surface. The lower surface had thick veins gradually turning brown towards the centre.

I want to advocate - once again - for the introduction of the collective noun "conflagration" for firebugs. Here: the first conflagration of firebugs I have seen this year.

I'm out west this week surveying some patches of woodland on the Balmacara estate outwith the well known Coille Mhor SSSI. There's some amazing lichens about, like these lovely Pseudocyphellaria citrina and P. norvegica. #lichenGBI

Not only real world cars have grown larger - these are my Lego cars from the 90ies. I can still recall how massive the Jetport Fire Squad (6640) was - 6 studs wide! Our modern fire pickup trucks (egg 60319) are all 6 studs and larger than the airport firetruck.

Vacation - Building my old Lego sets with the kids. I am surprised that we still manage to complete sets.
