I realise that the latest entries here have been pretty negative, so here's a nice aerial photo of a snowy landscape near where I live, to make up for it. Heaven knows we need some positivity at the moment.

This is all well and good, encouraging for experienced developers and encouraging juniors to learn the tools. But it doesn't change the fact that clients are departing in droves because they see cheaper options and jump ship, even if the system they turn to is snake oil and produces awful results.

Being an independent WordPress developer these days feels like being the mole in whack-a-mole. It seems as though every day, there are more and more companies (even former site developers and people I'd counted as colleagues) who are making tools to make as many people unemployed as possible.

This example of detrimental optimisation reminds me of a case where someone wanted walk to the corner shop daily to buy a newspaper instead of reading news online, because it gave him the chance to interact with neighbours and to enjoy a regular routine. Not everything needs to be more efficient.

I picked up an incredibly insightful piece of advice when watching a woodworking video recently. The presenter said, “if you find yourself about to do something which feels wrong, then stop”. He was referring to safety when using a table saw, but I think it’s appropriate to anything in life.

I'm sorry but making content images semi-transparent / reducing their opacity in dark mode is not an inclusive design strategy. It makes the images less accessible—which is more problematic when the images contain text. & the fact that they need to be hovered to become fully visible makes it worse.
