We faculty are playing "CSI: Did my student actually write this." I vacillate between finding ways to construct assignments where AI may be a tad less useful, and saying "WTH, if students want to pay money and make no effort to learn, while a computer program writes their essays, that's on them."

One of the many sins of genAI is that the societal necessity of staying vigilant for it frequently turns into a policing strategy, often with punitive consequences for the handful of people who still write and make art with human integrity. I hope this student wins their suit.

I've gone down some interesting rabbit holes researching potential Tampa Bay baseball stadium sites, but I did not expect to be researching WWII German POW camps as part of this beat.

This is simply not true. Many states have scholarships for high-ish achieving in-state students (Bright Futures in FL, Calgrant in CA), and low income students can also receive federal Pell grants.
