Remember when digital was cheaper than physical because it cost less to make? Then they made them the same price anyway. Now suddenly physical is “too expensive” to keep making. You didn’t solve a cost problem, you engineered one. This is just an excuse to kill ownership by PlayStation.

I really wanna know how the current expense of gaming is affecting younger generations because I feel like the industry at large is sprinting into a brick wall where basically every kid will only have played robolox and F2P games like fortnite or gachas and they won't grow up to buy the last of us 3

I don’t want this point to be lost in the discourse. Going digital-only means inequity for people who cannot afford internet or constantly purchasing new games. Libraries provide opportunities for people to experience games they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford, and that will be lost.

The death of physical media seems like a small thing practically but in essence it represents the total dissolution of games as “objects of art” and instead reduces them purely to “intellectual property”. It’s a slow disaster but if you care about games as an art form it IS a disaster.

Sony: We're taking away digital movies you bought. No refunds. We're not making physical PlayStation games anymore. We're killing digital games on PS3 and Vita. ...why should I get a PS6 when it comes out then? If you want an expensive digital only gaming device, get a PC!

digital games have already standardized the idea of never going down in price, only having discounts, so removing the physical element means now they can also start standardizing having even more control over the price of their games (ie make them never "lose value")

Nintendo are far from a perfect company but man I can't take the hate they get seriously when everyone else is killing what I love about games. The people that make them and the tangibility that makes them more than data on a drive. It's never been so dire and they feel like all the hope remaining

Discs were the one thing that console gaming had an advantage in against PCs. Like this, I see no reason to buy a potentially digital-only PS6 in place of a gaming PC. Especially since it might actually be cheaper.

Announcing that you're done with physical prints the same day as shutting down your pre-2013 digital stores, right after the digital movie fiasco on the very same storefront and (crucially) while other media like CDs and movies are seeing a renaissance in the physical realm. Genius.
