#FungiFriday Delighted to find the diminutive Bog Beacon (Mitrula paludosa) at Birk Bank Bog, N Lancashire today. This uncommon earthtongue is found in wet places.

Today, April 25th marks the Roman festival of Robigalia. The malevolent god, Robigus and goddess Robigo of Rust (and mildew). Sacrifices of red dogs were made to appease these gods to prevent rust diseases of crops particularly cereals ensuring yields were enough to avoid famine.

I’ve been foraging for what, ten years or so… and this is the first time I have ever found Calocybe gambosa - St. George’s Mushroom. I’ve looked for them for years. I was very pleased and will remember where I found them for next year. Tasty! #FungiFriends

Good news for English Mycologists. The Bank's decision to include wildlife on UK banknotes has revealed that the fungus Calocybe gambosa will be on the £5 pound note. The common name of course is St. Georges mushroom so Churchill will be replaced with something equally patriotic.
