Just finished a big road trip. It’s surreal after having such a wonderful time and seeing so many beautiful things, being able to identify huge plumes of wildfire smoke from miles away on the last leg of the trip.

I’ve been sitting on a Bookshop gift card from Christmas, and right as I was getting antsy about using it before I forgot, what do I see? This book sounds INCREDIBLE, and I am so excited to have it to look forward to next year.

What a sobering fact.

We have not had free and fair elections in this country. We have always had some people who had to vote on extremely hard mode in some places of this country. Expecting people to wait in line 9 hours *is* a form of poll tax.

I keep seeing people say things like, “Well we’re not going to HAVE elections,” and with all due respect, I think this is both wildly pessimistic and also wildly naive. We are not going to have free and fair elections. We also have not had them in the past.

Finally caught up on my book reviews. I’ve read over 100 books so far this year, which is cool or whatever I guess, but MUCH MORE IMPORTANTLY I have written (sometimes short) (often useless) reviews for every. single. one! THAT is my true accomplishment.

I don’t have any money to spare right now, but I’m hoping what little reach I have might land in front of someone who does.

I’ve started reading poetry before bed as part of my goal to expand into a couple of genres/formats I want to give more attention to (the others being nonfiction and graphic novels). It’s turned out to be a really nice way to wind down!

There are few people I put energy towards hating because it’s bad for my mental health to dwell in that space instead of uplifting and protecting, but McConnell is top of that list for the immense harm he’s caused. He deserves no praise for offering a glass of water to combat a fire he orchestrated.

I made and canned jam today! Pear with saffron and vanilla bean. There were a few speed bumps getting there, but that soft POP as the jars cooled after the water bath was so satisfying. I’ll be sending them off to my friends across the country and I hope they can taste my love for them 🥰

My January reading! While I haven’t logged for today yet, I’m unlikely to finish another one, so figured it’s safe to share now.

Picked up our first box of our new CSA share this afternoon and immediately used some of the bok choy in it in the miso chicken & rice soup I made for dinner. Incredibly satisfying 🤤 I’m so excited for the weeks ahead!

I finished a book I LOVED from a new-to-me author and immediately went to look for her backlist for more only to discover she only has three others out, and they’re part of a different series 😭 I’m definitely going to read them, but I need more!!

One of my book goals for the year is what I’m calling net zero acquisition, meaning for every book I buy in 2025, I want to read at least one from what I owned prior to this year. I wasn’t on track, but wasn’t doing too bad until I totally blew up my ratio shopping Libro’s sale books yesterday 🫣

Had trouble deciding what book to start next, so I picked a novella about vampires to play while I decided, immediately got so engrossed I forgot to look for a longer book afterwards, and ended up having to make a shortlist of 20 and roll a die. Ended up with another vampire book 😁
