thinking about this kind of thing a lot lately, on the narrative game side. an early test i do for my rules is 'can i explain this to my mum', and in a recent attempt at that she (a former drama teacher) asked what i'm doing for people who struggle/aren't confident with making stuff up on the spot.

"A good GM can make any game work" - trite, thought terminating cliche, simplistic "A well designed game is fun even when you aren't very good at it" - actually useful design advice.
