Today I sat by assignment in the 497th District Court in Harris County. I'm hoping to sit or serve in all 254 counties during my judicial career. I have a long way to go! A loftier goal would be all 500+ district courts! Bring it on!

I have a proposal for the NCAA football rules committee: Incomplete passes that both originate and terminate behind the line of scrimmage are live balls even if the ball went forward in the air. It's only a dead ball if it goes beyond the line of scrimmage. (Makes batted balls more important too!)

This is why they say the state's key witness in most prosecutions is the defendant.

Years ago, while sitting on the bench, I felt something in my eye. Trying to be sneaky, I took a sip from my Yeti mug and squeezed my right eye closed as hard as I could behind it. When I put it down and refocused, a young defendant in the front row was visibly blushing, convinced I'd winked at her.

I was presented last night with a beautiful memory book celebrating my 12 years on the bench, and it had some familiar @bsky.app faces in it! So upon looking at this pic, I noticed something very odd. Judge Hofmann and I are the same height, yet he towers over me in this pic. So I got the full shot and zoomed in on his feet. TREACHERY!!

Last night, the far west Texas community threw a celebration of my 12 years as judge. Thanks to everyone who made the event so special, particularly my friends Judges Rob Hofmann, David Canales, and Robert Cadena (left to right below) who made the long drive to attend.

I don't know if it's just me, but the Westlaw AI-powered research thing is comically bad. Me: "Find me cases about X" Response: "I have found 12 completely irrelevant cases. Here, have a yellow flag calling a SCOTUS case into doubt because of a district court opinion as a treat."

Leaving the Culberson County courthouse after what was likely my last in-person hearing there as judge of the 394th District Court. It's a bittersweet moment, as I'm excited to move on to statewide special judging, but I'll miss all of the wonderful people I've worked with in Van Horn.

The worst person to give power to is someone who desperately wants to wield it.

When you upload your picture to ChatGPT and tell it to turn you into a superhero. (Yeah, not even close! 😆) It turned the robe into a supersuit and cape, the gavel into a judicial Mjolnir, and the blue eyes into glowing glasses (and what appears to be my superpower: shocking litigants!)

Turning off body-cam during an incident/investigation can result in suppression of LEO evidence. But do you believe we've reached the point where body-cams are so ubiquitous, freely available, and cheap to operate that a departmental choice not to wear them should itself result in suppression?
