🧵Yesterday, I received notice that my #NIH grant, on the social environment, lifecourse, epigenetics & #birthoutcomes in Black families, was terminated. This grant represented a critical effort to address the ⬆️ rates of maternal & infant mortality in the US, particularly among Black mothers & babies

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

Such a hard lesson that I’m still learning myself.

This is insanely worrisome considering the fate of so many lives rest in the hands of researchers. This isn’t just “DEI”. This is oncology, pain management, suicide risk, and so much more. And if we don’t fall in line, our research and jobs are cut? And that’s freedom?

Please add any research you know has been cancelled. We need to hold this administration accountable.

So, who is going to SRCD?

I worry that we’re not talking about this more. Just as we don’t allow the president to change primary education curriculum, we shouldn’t be shifting our basic research aims every 4 years. Especially in light of how much work it takes to complete a study in general!

Truly speechless thinking of the sheer volume of staff and researchers who are currently impacted by the sudden halting of NIH activities. Even if this is a “pause”, this backs up a pipeline of research proposals that will have a long-lasting trickle-down effect. These are wild times.

An exciting day in autism epidemiology - numbers are out from the 2021 GBD study. Who's "disease" framing and associated language aside, this is a big effing deal for understanding the prevalence and impact of autism across the globe, especially in LMICs! Overall prevalence was 0.79% (0.66-0.93)

Future PhD proposal defenses, inspired by congressional hearings for cabinet nominees: Questioner: “If the results of Expt 1 don’t come out as you predict, how will you adjust the design of Expt 2?” Student: “Professor, I will not answer a question about a hypothetical.”

It makes me sad that our applicants face such steep odds, & that there's a mismatch..
