Spouse works in public media. I work in higher ed. The other shoes are starting to drop, but oh so slowly. We (specifically) are fine right now. But we're both feeling it tonight.

So, if humanities produce good job outcomes, humanities have a secure ROI that bring in more than they cost, and STEM now has an even lower ROI due to grant cuts…. shouldn’t we invest more in humanities where less $$ goes a longer way? Apparently not. We should ask why not. /9

This is the truest thing I have ever seen. You cannot imagine how much the Romans would have lost their minds for excel. They literally already started writing our historical chronicles in synchronized columns *by hand*

Thanks to all of the Minneapolis folks who spent a nice summer Saturday at the DFL convention and got us a much better outcome than an endorsement of the current mayor — and documented the day on Bluesky. I appreciate you.

Twin Cities: I strongly recommend the new production of Cabaret at the Guthrie. Funny, sexy, moving — and anchored with a stunning performance by Jo Lampert as The Emcee. I loved it. It’s not a feel-good kind of show, but it’s timely and affirming. Go, if musicals are a thing you enjoy at all.

Does Bluesky suck? Delurking to say that what I read here is alternately angering, informative, annoying, thought-provoking, eye-rolling, delightful, odd, and hilarious. Just what I'm hoping for out of a social media site.

In case you needed confirmation that the current administration has literally *no idea* what the Library of Congress actually does, or what its holdings are, or how it's used. The stupidity is so concentrated it's burning my skin.

About to be Jokerfied by this blandly tossed-off statement in a piece about how the lie machines will never stop lying. Why concede that AI is "useful" in writing term papers? What is the purpose of writing assignments in education? Is AI accomplishing that purpose?

Not convinced of the utility of the descriptor "apple-sized" for hail. Are we talking about one of those pathetic box-lunch sized red (un)delicious, or a honeycrisp as big as your head?

I have not been a practicing Catholic in decades. But in Francis, I recognized the best parts of the Catholicism I was raised with: a relentless focus on social justice and caring for poor and marginalized people. I will miss his voice.

I’m pretty meh on most violin concertos, but the Beethoven was love at first listen for me as a kid and I still love it. So glad Minnesota Orchestra is broadcasting tonight’s performance of it with Erin Keefe. Just what I needed after a rough week.
