Analog learning is a response to AI that education should consider. But if it becomes just another way to police student AI use, it will fail. The better goal is creating intentional spaces to help students understand when AI supports their learning or thinking, and when it quietly replaces it.

I’m enjoying Bodies of Learning by Guy Claxton & Emily Poel. Humans are wired to connect. When teachers build belonging and care amongst students, kids flourish. When they don’t, they languish. Helping a class gel isn’t sentimental. It’s “good teaching for good learning.”

The capability overhang from the models we have today (and that are coming soon) are large enough that large-scale change to work and society over the next 5+ years is now inevitable even if AI development stops. We should spend more time thinking about mitigating the bad & encouraging the good.

We talk a lot about the need for middle leaders to be skilled in leading difficult conversations. But I’m coming to the conclusion that most “difficult conversations” are really the result of weak change leadership. When change is constant, the ability to lead it prevents conflict from escalating.

Tristan Harris challenged us to move beyond individual agency toward “we-gency”, collective responsibility in shaping the future. Referencing the question “Are we being good ancestors?”, he framed AI as an ethical challenge requiring long-term thinking.

Audrey Tang, Taiwan’s Cyber Ambassador, engages young people in civic participation through digital platforms and even school screens are intentionally large enough to encourage collaboration. She sees technology as a “campfire”, where differences are illuminated and common ground can emerge.
