Just wrote a parameterized test in Kotlin for the first time. Being able to simply reference a method to generate all the test cases is quite handy 👌

You actually don't need neovim for this. The vidir command from the moreutils package supports this flow while respecting your $EDITOR environment var. This means you could also use vscode, helix or any editor of your liking. It can also be installed on macOS. manpages.debian.org/testing/more...

I just forced myself to use yazi + helix + zellij instead of vscode for a two hour coding session and it felt surprisingly productive. With some configuration and some tweaks I could imagine switching full time.

I have a love-hate relationship with this feeling when you inline some code that was encapsulated and typescript immediately notices that there are unreachable states and you can delete substantial amounts of code. Less code *yay*! It was there since forever and never relevant *ah shit*.

Everyone is always complaining about Rust compile times. We are using Kotlin at work which I have to touch every now and then and in my experience it's at least as bad.

To me, this slide from @aaronboodman.com's talk today was the most interesting one from the first day of #localfirstconf. Running differential dataflow backwards for initial hydration seems like such an interesting idea.

What I really liked about all the talks today at #localfirstconf was the honesty about tradeoffs. It felt like almost every talk mentioned the topic. We should want multiple solutions to exist, because there's never _really_ a one size fits all solution.

I started building a custom n8n node for work today. I previously built our custom Zapier integration a few years back. The DX of building the Zapier integration wasn't great but they have improved it a lot. n8n feels *much* worse in comparison.

An issue in some very old code resurfaced today. I remember to have struggled with the implementation a few years back but was delighted that it only took a couple of minutes to fix today. Being able to quickly see what's wrong is such a nice reminder that you have improved in your ability.

I'm really not sure naming migration files for SQL migrations is such a good idea. If we were only using the version prefix, git would automatically recognize conflicts on PRs, which I think is arguably more useful than having named migrations.

I know everyone says "change tech jobs every two years" but let me tell you, getting to do the end-of-life for things that you built eight years ago is incredibly satisfying work. If you change jobs often you miss out on a lot of learning opportunities that only come with time.

Keeping re-renders in check in react can be quite difficult. But there are so many cases where it can pay off by making code MUCH easier to understand, especially around things like `useEffect`! It should really be a bigger priority for folks.

I find it hard to understand how to do observability *right*. Theres a lot of confusing terminology and not that many examples of people doing what I think I should do. Just hasn’t clicked yet.

I think this is backwards. APIs generally are less work to build than websites. Most websites today are already an internal API + a frontend. I think its reasonable to assume there will be companies that _only_ have an API. The AIs are going to consume this and humans will just interact with the AI.

Just figured out that I can pass an SSH agent to docker when building images in BuildKit by setting SSH_AUTH_SOCK and using `docker build --ssh default`. This saved my day!

I used nix to build a docker image for my rust binary a while back and decided to do the same now again. Downside is that I run macOS and deploy to linux so I‘m running the build locally through docker and it re-downloads and compiles everything every time 😪

I just setup terraform to provision a Hetzner VPS and then automatically setup Tailscale SSH and a firewall using cloudinit. It was much easier than expected and just worked, first try. Love it!

I had to make a recursive algorithm iterative today. Fortunately, I found some pseudocode, but AI was underwhelming when asked to simply translate the code. After translating it manually, asking the AI to compare mine to the pseudocode worked much better to iron it out.

I migrated one of my pet projects from Remix to TanStack Router today and I‘m very impressed with the library so far!

This year was the first time I managed to finish all #AdventOfCode puzzles. 🍾🍾 I did skip a few part twos but maybe I'll catch up on those in the next few days.
