The Saunders-Roe (Saro) Lerwick (1938) was intended to replace obsolescent biplane flying boats and operate alongside, or even supersede, the Short Sunderland. In the event, numerous issues with the aircraft resulted in only 21 being produced. Of these, 11 were lost in accidents.
