Aug 20, 1950 Australian born Major Benjamin Carlin and his wife yesterday reached the island of Flores, in the Azores, in their amphibious jeep. They had been missing for more than a week. The Carlins left Nova Scotia on July 19 in an attempt to cross the Atlantic in their 17ft converted jeep.

There are some good #NavalHistory photos in here. CAPT James Buchanan, RAN, was in charge of one of the three Allied naval brigades that first went ashore in Japan after the surrender, and was the first Australian to enter Japan after the armistice, on (I think) 30 Aug 1945.

It’s the 77th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush’s arrival at Tilbury, carrying about 800 West Indian migrants to Britain, among the first members of the eponymous ‘generation’. Windrush would be historically notable for this alone. But the ship’s story touched on many other chapters of C20th.
