In all seriousness, publishers are going to have to figure out how to market books in the post-social-media landscape. That should be an implicit part of their job. What authors/artists can do on their own is increasingly limited and siloed.

Never underestimate the power of the action verb. I'll die on this hill, honestly.

Me, 2 days ago: "Okay, I clearly need to do some research on topic X for my book edits and character arc." Me, today: "Okay, I've listened to 12 hours of podcasting about topic X, so now I just need to squeeze all of this into my story without making it into an essay! Easy, pfffft!" .....🫠

Agency in historical fiction can be so hard to write, truly. Characters have to work within such constraints. It doesn’t mean they can’t be active, but authors have to straddle that line of honoring the period-typical level of agency while also allowing for active choices within that level. Phew.

I'm really tired of the "everything should be sexy" / "nothing should be sexy" arguments about media. Some things should be sexy and other things should not be sexy and everyone needs to come to terms with the fact that not all things will please them, personally.

Sometimes I find it funny how concerned we are with fictional characters doing things "for a reason" and "acting with motivation" when humans in reality do really dumb things all the time without knowing why. Anyway, welcome to my whatever talk, I guess.

Predictability isn't always bad in fiction. Suspense relies so much on predictability, just to mention one example. I wish we could stop this "plot twists are the only way to tell a story"-mindset that seems so prevalent, but maybe that's just me. Eh. I will die on this hill, I guess.

The thing about writing toxic/unhealthy family dynamics is that miscommunication (as a trope) may not be thing, but a general lack of communication definitely is. Yes, it feels illogical that person X didn't tell person Y about thing Z... and that's the toxic/unhealthy part.

The recent talks about horror not having to be scary to qualify as horror has resonated a lot with me. Especially b/c I've been asking my friends for months: "I think my story is still horror, right?" Horror is designed to make you feel uncomfortable, and that doesn't always translate as scary.

Y'know, so many people still say they want unlikeable characters, but it honestly seems to me that what they want are "likeabl-y unlikeable" characters, which kinda defeats the point, imo. Oh, and a flawed character does *not* equal an unlikeable character. All characters are flawed by default.
