We miss the student perspective when we talk about AI in the classroom. In my experience, students KNOW that AI is cheating, that it’s bad for them, but can feel pressured to use it because of the broader framing of it being “the future.” If we give them an excuse to not use it, they will take it.

Do not accept this framing. Our teaching is fine. Education does not require a new fancy tech product to help us meet the needs of the market. Because the market’s current needs are actually that we stop agitating about their vicious business practices and the policies that promote them.

The question is why anyone would ever take a marketing statement at face value. I have more rigorous and independently verified evidence of the performance of my goddam electric tea kettle than anyone bothered to demand from the magic AI bean factories before handing over our institutions to them

Can't help but think that the hand-wringing about protest "optics" is just a way to blame protesters for the reaction of the state. At the very least it is centering the ideals of the powerful over those fighting for power. Either way, its still policing legitimacy while prioritizing the reaction.
