The Texas Board of Education will be voting on a required reading list next week. If you want to testify, need to register in advance. You can submit an informal comment, but I think they are under no obligation to consider those.

Mike is running against a book banner and "parents rights advocate" on our school board (NEISD). If you can, it would help greatly to chip in a little bit to help get him elected! I cannot emphasize enough that the incumbent needs to go before TEA takes over!

Strong recommendation to teaching faculty to just say no to this stuff, even if you are AI curious/enthusiastic. This is meant to reduce faculty autonomy and capture human labor with automation. You're selling out your future self and the profession as a whole.

This doesn't have to keep happening. It is possible to craft worlds where women and children are safe, rather than objects to be either dominated or protected from the domination of others. It is possible to create a world where people can just be safe in their bodies.

It’s been said before, but the extent to which the academic, cultural, professional and pedagogical world was already governed in a way amenable for LLMs to succeed, well before LLMs existed, gets far too overlooked.

i genuinely do not understand why *anyone* would want a phd if they're trying to outsource their thinking to claude. like, there are no jobs, no work-life balance, no resources (for most of us), and the work gets tougher every year. the thinking is the only fun part, i promise.

Not exactly shocking news but it's worth noting that Hubbard seems to have requested money from Epstein to fund an anti-Title IX conference (something in line with, say, his class & multiple conference talks about how women are regularly making false rape claims)

I may have a stroke. Someone said protests don’t belong in church and it took every ounce of self-censure within me not to say “Deborah you are literally a Protestant.” A PROTESTant. I assume they think Luther was nailing Bed, Bath, & Beyond coupons to the door.

yes, because ultimately, christian nationalism and its classical education project is fundamentalist in its approach to knowledge and learning. Curiosity has to be limited, there is no open-mindedness. the CLT is a christian nationalist project.

What this reveals is that for most people in charge right now “AI” is less useful as a technology than as a piece of language to shift a conversation in whatever direction they need it to go. In one minute it will propel a new economy; in another it’s the reason for a recession.
