Listening to some Tx SBOE members trying to defend the lack of diversity at the hearing was appalling, i.e. Why do students need to "see themselves" in books, or Don't we all have shared western civ values"? etc. But even conservative parents were unhappy that TEA would dictate reading lists.

To recap, the TXlege mandated that TEA create at least one title per grade on a mandatory booklist. So TEA made a lengthy "required" list peppered with archaic titles and little diversity especially for Latino students who make up over 52% of students in Texas.

We've been monitoring Tx State Board of Education hearing today on TEA's proposed mandatory Statewide Reading list. We have concerns about the lack of diversity on the list, as well as the length of the list, and the archaic nature of some titles. The majority of testimony opposed the list.
