Spent the day finishing a reverse outline for one of my clients' manuscript critiques. I don't always do reverse outlines, because quite simply, they're not often needed. This time, though, I created one to help illustrate some suggestions on pacing, repeated scenes/beats, and character motivation.

A friendly reminder about all writing advice: Rules aren't RULES. They're guidelines about audience expectation. Any rule can be broken if you break it well enough - that is giving the audience something better than they expect. The best way to break the rules is understanding and mastering them.

Writers: Remember that a key part of your novel is interiority. It's easy to get lost in the action, but readers need to know: -why your characters are acting the way they are -how they react to actions by others These are key to tracking their character journey. Don't keep readers in the dark!

Final update on today's checklist: I finished! I didn't get quite as far on the copy edit as I'd anticipated (~20 pages short), and the meeting didn't happen due to things beyond my/my client's control. I'm just grateful to have the flexibility to work around the "life happens" events.
