Issaquah CM here. Can confirm the city received a grant to buy Flock cameras and will discuss at upcoming public meetings (details below). I’d recommend anyone with opinions in Issaquah reach out to council. I have serious concerns but will save my own comments for the public meetings.

This is exactly right. Age verification / online ID check legislation literally forces companies to collect MORE data on children (and everyone else) not less. We desperately need privacy, antitrust, and algorithmic justice legislation. Not censorship bills like KOSA and expanded surveillance.

Generally right, but I would more say that House and Senate Republicans are very different groups with different cultures. Agreement and support from Senate Republicans helps, but does not at all bind House Republicans and neither body defers to the other (same for Dems).

60 amendments IS a lot. Especially if multiple Republicans get up and speak on each amendment. But it’s also a signal from the minority party that says “we don’t like this”. The majority party can then see if there’s room to negotiate on their concerns, so I assume that’s what’s happening now.

Yeah really. And as @onekade.bsky.social pointed out, the only reason this was discovered is because the partner looked up her plate number on www.haveibeenflocked.com! The current version of SB 6002 exempts Flock data from public records requests, so prevents discovering these abuses.

A great example of one of our major concerns about SB 6002, the bill regulating Flock and other ALPRs. Weak "guardrails" don't protect us, but *do* give an for cities to turn the cameras back on -- and undercut local organizing in cities that haven't turned off the cameras yet. #waleg

A tiny town in Southside, Virginia with a population of ~6000 people has contracted with Flock to install 400 always-on cameras to surveil its six-square-mile footprint. That's one camera per 15 residents, or nearly 67 per square mile.

The growing movement to cancel Flock Safety contracts across the country is great. We need to remember that Flock is one of many ALPR vendors and we need to oppose all of them. If we're not careful, we're going to dismantle Flock only to have Axon or Motorola take their place.
