One way that Orbán sought to entrench power was adopting a new Hungarian constitution in 2011 that classified many policy areas as 'cardinal laws' that require a two-thirds majority vote to change. With almost 100% of votes counted, the Hungarian opposition has just achieved what seemed impossible.

Two recent studies have re-examined risk of birds colliding with rotor blades of wind turbines. Research found that there was not a single collision. "The results from Aberdeen Bay show that modern offshore wind farms can be operated with low risk to wildlife."

Regret to inform everyone that Peter Magyar beat the world’s smartest illiberal populist in large measure by working incredibly hard for 2 straight years, meaning the rest of us are just going to have to get off our asses and do shit rather than just complaining.

The result is huge. Vast in its consequences. Orban was the inspiration to all those who came after him. He served as Putin's puppet, undermining Europe from within and Ukraine from without. He funded a vast network of fascists around the world. It's all vulnerable now, or falling apart entirely.

This was an ideological victory. Péter Magyar is no liberal, but he is pro-European. Voters utterly rejected Orban's relentless campaign of hatred against Ukraine and Brussels.

Orban owns the media. He controls the information environment. He rigged the electoral system to make defeat next-to impossible. The govt of the most powerful country on earth tried to bribe Hungarian voters in his favour. It didn't work.

Now Tisza projected at 138 seats against 54 of Orban’s Fidesz. If these numbers are confirmed, this is a larger victory than Orbàn’s 2010 landslide, which allowed him to change the 🇭🇺Constitution and start backsliding towards an illiberal democracy. A historic day.

JD Vance is on a historic roll: He campaigns for AfD in Germany - they lose. Invited the Pope to come to US for Trump’s big event - Pope refuses. Leads peace negotiations with Iran - fails miserably. Campaigns in Hungary for Orbán - who gets smoked.

Orbán's electoral crushing is a far greater achievement than most people outside Hungary realise. He systemically consolidated power for 16 years, fixed the electoral map, abused govt power for political purposes & censored media. The hurdles that Hungarians overcame for this moment were immense.

The fact that Orbán conceded so quickly — let alone at all — shows the astounding extent of the opposition's win. Orbán had literally no chance whatsoever to contest the result. He was decisively and clearly rejected by the Hungarian people.

Orban's defeat in Hungary is one of those events with far reaching consequences for the International Conservative movement he built. Former Australian PM Tony Abbott, who remains very much tied up with the Liberal Party, is associated with the state-funded Danube Institute.

Tonight I'm thinking of the many Hungarians I've met over the years - many of them abroad against their wishes, many of them queer - who haven't stopped fighting, for sixteen years. For most of us, Orbán was an on-and-off nuisance on TV - at best. For them, he was a constant nightmare.
