In the division of Environmental Justice, we’ve received word that the Office of External Civil Rights and Environmental Justice (OEJECR) effectively no longer exists. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in D.C.

The probationary employee reinstatements are also facing court challenges by the Trump administration. They do not know when they’re beat. There is no respect for the system of checks and balances in this administration.

It is more important than ever to show support for the civil service. Our union is fighting for basic procedures to be followed, it’s been a battle to have the OPM staff commit to giving the full 90 day RIF notice required of them through establish procedure. They want to rip jobs from under workers

Work will go undone. State agencies will not have the funding and technical support they need to conduct the very basics of their environmental programs. Already, state-level superfund programs are overwhelmed with the number of site cleanups they have and request federal assistance.

The number of employees that may be subject to this RIF has been estimated to be as many as 80% of the staff in Region 5. This would leave vital services, such as the Great Lakes National Program Office and Enforcement inspections, understaffed.

There are mixed communications over when the RIF (Reduction in Force) orders will come down. But we do know they are coming. Most expect the first round to conclude in June, with a second round concluding this September.
