My own history with Hiveworks was fraught with many of the same issues that webcomickers faced, as I explain in this article.

Another thing I would add is that, especially online, you don't actually know your favorite artist as a person, you know curated bits and pieces. That picture you have in your head of them is always going to be a construction, and that's normal. But it is, at best, a fragment.

Okay so here is an abridged version of my story with HW. We (me and @moonsheen.bsky.social) never submitted to Hiveworks. We were wined and dined and talked into it. I agreed mostly because neither me nor Alex had it in us to run our own shop and that was the only thing I allowed HW to do.

RE: Hiveworks stuff, it's become really clear is how much of the toxicity of the leadership came from seeing fellow artists as competition and threats rather than comrades who lift each other up. The world is big enough for all of us. I hope we can work together and fight our real enemy (fascists)
