Did a little bit of gamemaker tonight still got lots to do tho. I am hopefully almost done with the slope logic...but I may have some oddities that might require some thinking to solve.

Lyn got me a copy of Gunstar Super Heroes as a pick-me-up from the other week when I was feeling down (I've been feeling that way a lot lately it seems) and as an early valentines thing ;0;! Never played this one so I'm excited to dig into it later!!!

Wrote an article about my geodesic raytracer shader: sibaku.github.io/site/playgro... Instead of the usual straight lines, it follows curved space! You can think about it like light bent due to gravity. There are some predefined bending functions, but you can also define your own!

Maybe when I'm further along in these collision shenanigans, I might reach out to some gamemaker mutuals who wanna take a look at the code to make sure I didn't totally fuck it all up. But for now aside from some oddities it's slowly coming together.

Todays progress. I still need to find a good way to accurately stick to the slopes when moving down. Not sure yet how I want to tackle that. Originally the slopes used rectangle col boxes, but it ended up snapping the player down from too far away. Also there is 1000 player instances here.

Almost have slope collision working for every angle, no pass through slopes yet. But I have passthrough walls, solid walls, and slopes that calculate their angles accordingly. Just some funky stuff happens depending on speed + bounding box coordinates still that I gotta sort out.

There is some funkiness of course because I got the tester object tied to mouse position and I can kinda teleport it beyond the collision haha. But in gameplay that wouldn't/shouldn't happen. It's a promising start anyway.

Already feeling better about using objects for collision lmao. I so far have pixel perfect collision on solid blocks from left to right, and even pass through platforms. Its also not dependent on what speed you are moving either.

Feeling slightly more optimistic now that I am ditching the tile stuff. I can see what information I might need to get. For ground angles I'll just do the raycasting method again that I've tried in the past. We move on I guess, its a shame all the tile stuff didn't work though as I hoped it would.

Yep, I think I might just abandon the tile collision system I wanted to create. The math mostly worked but... I don't feel like creating my own tile checking system to check absolutely every cell around the character when that is absolutely something the instance_place function should return.

time to sit down and keep hammering away at this collision stuff. Gonna scour the net for any nuggets of wisdom I can find too lol.

New day, while I still am feeling a bit down about my lack of skill/knowledge and hitting that ceiling once again concerning programming - i will keep on with it and bash my head against the wall until it works.

I do wish using a collision function in gamemaker would return each individual tile you are colliding with rather than just the tilemap reference. That would probably save me so much of a headache honestly, but I don't know if this will ever get added. Tile normals would also be a huge wish.

Feels like today overall was a waste of time haha. I haven't felt this frustrated at gamemaker/gamedev in a while though so thats not bad. I'll keep looking. I feel like I was on the cusp of it working but then it kinda fell apart when I started adding in the X axis to the equation.

About to throw my hands up at this collision stuff ugh. For as close as I always get, I just can't get it -right- how I want it. This is one thing that bothers me about gamemaker is I wish it was easier to do some of this stuff in an efficient way.

Once I get my collision code sorted, I'll probably have some smarter folks than myself take a look at it and see where I can improve it. I know of a few areas I am probably checking waaaaay too much and a lot of new arrays being made when checking for the tile flips/mirrors etc.

Todays progress. Spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get some of the collisions sorted on a few of the tiles. The good news is that colliding while going downwards is working great now. Started working on resolving collisions with the ceiling! Then I can do the walls axis lol.
