Cleaning can be messy. Cleaning indoor spaces can enhance the release of a chemicals with a range of volatility. Most persist for up to five hours in home testing. While not an excuse to not clean the bathroom, research has implications for cleaning professionals.
pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....
loading . . .
Influence of Cleaning on Indoor Air Concentrations of Volatile and Semivolatile Organic Compounds in Residences
Cleaning activities can affect indoor air composition long after the cleaning is completed. Utilizing data from detailed observational monitoring campaigns, conducted over 21 weeks, we explore the influence of cleaning activities in two normally occupied, single-family houses. To study emissions and chemistry, we quantified more than 200 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using a proton-transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer and 52 semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) using a semivolatile thermal-desorption gas chromatograph. During regular professional home cleaning, we observed postcleaning concentration enhancements in ā¼60% of measured VOCs and ā¼80% of measured SVOCs. Most of these concentration enhancements were not clearly linked to either primary emission from cleaning products or secondary formation through reactive chemistry. Instead, we infer that shifts in the sorptive properties of indoor surfaces account for most of these observations. Cleaning-associated enhancements mostly ebbed within a few hours, with some VOCs and lower-volatility SVOCs persisting more than 5 h, longer than would be expected for removal of inert species by ventilation. The use of carpet cleaner was associated with direct emission of 2-butoxyethanol, which persisted at elevated concentrations for days after the initial event. Home cleaning is potentially relevant for the health of professional cleaners and residents.

New paper about antibiotics in WWTPs during the COVID-19 pandemic :

loading . . .
Occurrence and Removal of Antibiotics in Wastewater Treatment Plants during the COVID-19 Pandemic
To evaluate the presence, removal, and concentration trends of antibiotics in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) during the COVID-19 pandemic, monthly influent and effluent samples were collected from four WWTPs in Minnesota to measure 26 antibiotics within six major categories from August 2020 to July 2022. Profiles of the studied antibiotics in each class were dominated by the compounds designated for human use in both influents and effluents. High influent concentrations of azithromycin (123ā1031 ng/L) were observed during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, and levels peaked approximately 3ā5 weeks after spikes of weekly COVID hospitalizations and reported cases. The concentration of azithromycin in influents positively correlated with weekly reported COVID cases (Pearson, r = 0.95, p < 0.001) and COVID hospitalizations (Pearson, r = 0.85, p < 0.05) with variably delayed response patterns for large versus small-scale WWTPs in different stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. WWTPs effectively removed most antibiotics (on average 47ā88% for sulfamethoxazole and 53ā80% for ciprofloxacin), while negative removals were occasionally observed (generally for low influent concentrations). The results of this 2-year study highlight that the COVID-19 pandemic affected the temporal dynamics of antibiotics authorized for the treatment of COVID-19 coinfections.
