Didn't intend for this to become a thread, but that's the rub. Any country subsidizing heat pumps which can only heat has created policy based on a misunderstanding of the technology which itself comes from ignorance re: the energy mix of a power grid and historical heating fuels.

This is in fact exactly backwards. The math isn't quite the same because the European climate is generally more mild, but it is more energy intensive to use a heat pump to heat indoor air in the winter than it is to cool indoor air in the summer. And summer is when solar energy production peaks.
