Today, SCOTUS put a hold on the 8th Circuit's terrible decision in the Turtle Mountain case, which held that private plaintiffs can't sue under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. This is good news. It revives the VRA at least temporarily while SCOTUS considers whether to take the case.

On the 60th anniversary of the end of the march from Selma to Montgomery, Trump issued an executive order that aims to seriously hurt voters and undermine free and fair elections in this country. It's chock full of things that are about as illegal as can be.

Trump just signed an exec order purporting to require a passport (or a few other docs) to register to vote. The president doesn't have the power to override a law passed by Congress. This is the SAVE Act but much worse. It is an illegal power grab that would block tens of millions from voting.

Today, Gov. Whitmer signed these 2 bills into law. Michigan is now the 20th state (+DC) to forbid open carry at polls and the 8th to prohibit all guns at counting centers. Much progress has been made on this issue since our Guns and Voting report, with new laws in CA, CO, MA, MI, NM, & VT in 2024.

Starting my Bluesky posting with some good news from the Michigan legislature: yesterday, they passed legislation prohibiting the open carry of guns at polling places & ballot drop boxes and prohibiting all guns at ballot counting facilities. The legislation will now head to the gov for signature.
