Failed teacher here. For what it’s worth, I would add more open, non-prescriptive, play-based activity, and a reduced obsession with learning objectives. It was teaching Year 2 with NO space for pure play on the timetable that did my head in.

In over 30 years of teaching I have never been trained that/ or told ‘kids don’t need knowledge’ Teachers have always taught ‘knowledge’ And many also taught critical thinking skills, taught contextual relevance, supported motivation, & developmental skills & dispositions

It really is and why this thread has resonated with so many people on here, X and Insta. Gibb, Gove, Michaela - have all pedalled this myth for a long time and it's BS and many people see through it.

And we wonder why - when they work this out - they disengage.

The implication that whole generations of teachers pre-2010 were teaching knowledge free curricula is equally laughable. When the NC was introduced in 1987-8, our internal audit showed 95% correspondence, with broad and balanced practice; minor tweaks.

3. So what’s the caveat? As you say, well-being, well-being, well-being. None of this should be at the expense of well being. P8 is the profit margin for the shareholders at the expense of the teachers and the products (students). It’s a complete nonsense and there are mounting casualties.

Couldn’t agree more, and hugely reassuring to read if you have vulnerable teens slogging through exam hell currently..

One can say they want a knowledge rich curriculum but in my experience it's the opposite, it's a very dumbed down curriculum. What kids really need is the motivation and skill to think for themselves and to be problem solvers. Critical thinking skills have fallen by the wayside.

Parents want a happy child before all else. To have silent corridors, detentions for not having a pen, being unable to take a blazer off if hot, locked toilets, not even being free at lunchtime, but having to have a set discussion & and then get told "but look at their P8 scores" is a nonsense!

I think this applies to leaders too. It's sad when leaders don't spend time with the children in their school, this in itself may well be an indictment of the amount of pressure they are under. Totally agree with your points though. Children are the best part of the job.

Have to agree. As a principal one of my 5 musts for beginning primary teachers was “Show the children you like them.” But, content is also important. I love Brookhart’s question, “Should my students be learning this today?” What are your musts? @stephygsalazar.bsky.social

Subject knowledge for primary teachers is first & foremost child development- emotional, physical, communication & language- , particularly those in EYFS & KS1
