Birmingham is built on the Triassic and our main logo for this year's conference features a Triassic reptile, a rhynchosaur, first described by Richard Owen in 1842 from Shropshire, just west of Birmingham. We will be running two Triassic field trips this year, although both are now sold out

This sucks, and we keep hearing the same story over and over. Privately-owned dinosaurs, in someone’s foyer or on loan to a museum, can’t be studied because they can be yanked from view or sold again with no notice. No access, no reproducibility, no sustained long term care. Only assholes do this.

When I was in JC our geology club got invited to do a dig for Jack Horner. We were in the Cloverly formation, removing overburden on a deinonychus bed. It was crowded so we took turns. When it wasn’t my turn I was wandering the hill I found a large dinosaur poop! The site manager let me keep it!

March 2018. I’m in the Triassic near Canyonlands National Park, out to prospect but aware how stingy the Chinle Fm. can be. I pull myself up on a low ledge and see invertebrate traces. Then dinosaur and aetosaur tracks. Then the palm-like plant Sanmiguelia. I had a lot of field notes to take. 🧪

I don't know about *best* story, but ... once upon a time in the Afar, Ethiopia, I wandered away from the team as I prospected for fossils & saw something whitish in the ground that @ first I took to be a modern bone. I *almost* kicked it. 🙄 Turned out to be a nice fossil sabre-toothed cat jaw! 🧪

My first tetrapod body fossil was this Mastodonsaurus fang from the Muschelkalk of Southern Poland. The thrill of being the first to see something for hundreds of millions of years is cosmically fulfilling

Back right before I started grad school I found a fossil canid jaw fragment in central Oregon that ended up in a paper by @jdorcutt.bsky.social! Having something I found incorporated into a piece of published research was/is pretty cool!

I've only been fossil hunting once, for fossil shark teeth. But @joeymaier.bsky.social said not to get my hopes up because it might take awhile and I wouldn't necessarily get a good-looking tooth. Then my first scoop of soil had a perfect shark tooth! I felt very lucky.
