Is anyone able to share their experiences of using epigraphs in academic texts? I'm trying to use a quote by Roland Barthes as an epigraph for a text on photography (that is, unsurprisingly, influenced by Barthes); the publisher is telling me this falls outside 'fair use' and is not permissible.
