The Geographical Magazine of the RGS-IBG has just published a supplement on choosing University Geography courses. Two of the five 'case study' students are from Durham - Mia Yearwood and Cameron Powell. They provide some valuable insights on what its like to study on our BA and BSc programmes.

Warm congratulations to Emily Williams who has won the 2025 Undergraduate Dissertation Prize awarded by the RGS-IBG Geographies of Health and Wellbeing Research Group. Emily's dissertation was entitled 'A Feminist Geographical Exploration of the Everyday Lives of People with Endometriosis'.

Our Department has been ranked #1 for Geography and Environmental Science in the Times Higher and Sunday Times rankings for 2026. This includes the highest scores for research and teaching quality (68.8 and 90.9 respectively) and a score of 94.4 for graduate prospects.

Last week the Department hosted Dr. Jennifer Walker, Assistant Professor at Rowan University and a specialist in climate change and coastal environments. During the week Jennifer gave a research seminar, met with a variety of staff and took part in a modelling group and a reading workshop.

Great to talk to our work experience student John yesterday about my research on mountain glacier contamination and water security. John has been contributing to @geogdurham.bsky.social social media during his time with us and is definitely a budding future geographer!

WE student John’s thought of the day: Yesterday I learned about tracing meltwater contaminants through glaciers and the implications of this for water insecurity and our research into a range of geopolitical issues from migration open borders and inequality to national identity and climate change.

Our colleagues gave presentations or made posters about their current research whilst others shared their experiences of impact and engagement activities. We will be sharing some short videos about the day on our website soon.

We held a 'research @ home' day this week where we came together as a research community to collectively think about how we can advance our research impact & public engagement activities.
