Twomey’s legal analysis is obviously very sharp but her political nous is nonexistent. These are not “unintended” consequences, they are the entire point the bill was rushed through.

Both major parties were so committed to criminalising criticism of Israel they rushed through legislation that is fundamentally opposed to their own values, and are reaping the consequences. No normal Australian wanted these laws. The Coalition split is just the first symptom of this disconnect.

The Attorney General can’t rule out that accurately describing Israel as committing genocide could land you in jail for 15 years.

Labor is passing laws that are more extreme than what Trump has attempted, on immigration and speech, largely at the behest of the media. But if Trump tried to do it, the same outlets would say they were bad, fascistic overreach. Insanely dumb country.

Tough gun laws are such an embedded part of Australia’s national mythos, remarkable to see bipartisan commitment to them disappear with virtually zero backlash because the media is more focused on making sure the Coalition votes for Israel-lobby backed hate speech laws.

The Guardian is reporting the Greens will vote for the government's amended hate speech bill, including giving the immigration minister more god powers and the scheme to designate new "hate" groups. No one else is reporting this, so unclear if it's accurate. Very odd development if so.

Remain bewildered by the Greens approach to this hate speech bill. Who is the constituency that wants them to negotiate in good faith to get some version of these laws over the line next week? Their political opponents have introduced a terrible bill. Their base hates it. Just knock it down.

Increasingly clear this bill should be voted down. Nothing this extreme should be rushed through parliament like this, especially when the genesis is just to appease pro-Israel lobby. Looks like the Coalition won’t support, so question is will Greens reject or cave as usual and bail out Labor.

There may need a good case to strengthen hate speech laws (though I’m not entirely convinced) but you can guarantee that whatever is being rushed together in response to Bondi is not thoughtful legislation, but a knee-jerk sop to pro-Israel figures. I can’t see why it should be supported.

After successfully campaigning for a Royal Commission into antisemitism, The Age seamlessly moves to making that synonymous with criticism of Israel. Watching it happen so transparently is next level.

Hard to view these terms of reference as anything other than a total capitulation to the media, the right and the pro-Israel lobby. Bondi is the third priority. Cracking down on immigration is before it.
