No official Hamas spokesperson ever praised Albanese. The office, for a guy who's been in jail for two years, did. We don't even know if he is aware the office put it out. Actual spokespeople for Hamas first rejected that statement, then a spokesperson said they weren't sure that office existed.

In the latest, very defensive version of this ‘Hamas statement’ reporting — is the SMH saying it didn’t even know their source was in an Israeli prison before we sent them a questions? How is that possible? It’s a 5 minute google?

This clarification is amazing. If you knew the statement was from his office and he was in prison, why did you not disclose that? Why did you imply you had communicated with him? If you didn’t know that… why not?

It is honestly astonishing that a news outlet reported the comments as coming from an individual who was imprisoned, when they actually came from his office. Neither of these things disclosed, and it led to a multi day outrage cycle in basically all the media.

This is hilariously ridiculous. For two years Albanese has been saying Australia isn't a serious player in the Middle East and everyone pressuring the government to do more needs to chill out. Now the government is backgrounding about us reconstructing Gaza!

“They can declare that the sky is pink for all we care. There has never been a state of Palestine and there never will be.” If this was said about the homeland of any other segment of Australians, this would straight-up be labelled hate speech in the media.
