My philosophy of gender class is gonna be so special (I think/hope)! 9 students and they all want to be there. Spent our 1st session talking about our hopes, commitments, responsibilities and earliest experiences of gender norms. I’m so lucky. ❤️

I’m almost done worrying about getting my grades in, which means I can start worrying about my very late referee report, my only a little late department assessment plan, and my almost late department program review update.

They say becoming a parent changes you in fundamental and unforeseeable ways and yep, here I am, legit excited about getting tickets to a Monster Jam rally.

Reading students’ final reflections for my wild class centered on The Quiet Year RPG. It ended with the community being wiped out by the Frost Shepherds (bad dice roll 🤷‍♀️) Last unit was on memory, and memorialization so I’m reading their takes on how they think their community should be remembered. 🥹

The post Thanksgiving virus spree is really really bad this year in Chicago (and probably everywhere). When I went to visit my son’s class, there were literally only like 7 kids there. RSV, pneumonia, stomach bugs galore (and almost certainly flu and COVID).

Teacher at my son’s school told us at parents’ night tonight about how a kid in the 15-36mo room was washing cloth napkins in a basin and started washing her own pants when she ran out of napkins. The teacher was like—I didn’t intervene. I had to protect her concentration. She has other pants. ❤️

Student spontaneously wrote a paper for my intro philosophy class as a dialogue between her ‘heart’ and her ‘mind.’ I love it (with both my heart and my mind).

Before I had a kid, I was like, OF COURSE we will do Santa, it’s so fun & magical. But now that this little person is before me and trusts me so absolutely, I’m not sure I can do it. I know this is a tired old debate, but it’s hitting me in a real way for the 1st time this year.

Student wrote at the top of his paper that he thinks I’m gonna like it bc he “took off [his] white boy grammar for this” 😂 I’m dying and the student is 100% right. It is such a relief to read something I know is REAL.

Nothing like a vicious stomach bug tearing through your house to celebrate the end of the semester. Taking care of a puking child while you are also sick is a real delight. 🫠

Last class of the semester in a couple hours and I’m struggling. This was an 8 week blended class with low attendance & participation. I was too burnt out to problem solve to improve things. I want to salvage my last 75min with them & try to do something mildly helpful/engaging but I am tiiiiired 😞
