The massive support of military and economic aid to Israel by the United States has a long history and intwined in that history if the role of US unions even before the establishment of the Israeli state. Unknown to most workers and the public, US union leadership have played a critical role in supporting the state of Israel and also assisting the Israeli corporate trade union the Histadrut. In an important new book “No Neutrals There: US Labor, Zionism and the Struggle for Palestine, the labor historian Jeff Schuhrke talks about the role of the AFL president Samuel Gompers who supported Zionism and how US trade leaders became a propagandists for the establishment of a Zionist state and the removal of Palestinian workers. He also talks about how the AFL-CIO leadership including Liz Schuler, president of the AFL-CIO has sought to also shutdown debate about Palestine in unions and the San Francisco labor council.
