I’ve been dipping my toe into Magic the Gathering over the last year and half. Some observations: Deck building is incredibly addictive and probably even more fun than actually playing the deck. Commander is such a great social activity. MTG fandom is the absolute worst.

Watched a good Aussie horror flick called Leviticus. It’s a queer take on It Follows that swaps sex for conversion therapy. While the message is a tad heavy-handed, Joe Bird (Talk to Me) and Stacy Clausen do a remarkable job carrying us through the love and horror. #sxsw

Saw the latest flick from Damian McCarthy, the director of the criminally underseen Oddity, at #sxsw last night. It’s called Hokum and takes place in a spooky Irish hotel and once again shows that McCarthy understands suspense and tension better than most genre filmmakers.

Latest #sxsw flick: Pizza Movie starring Gaten Matarazzo, Sean Giambrone, & Lulu Wilson, made by the BriTANicK guys. Imagine the tripping balls sequence from 21 Jump Street but the whole movie. I thought it was hilarious, but I admittedly have the sense of humor of a rowdy 9 year old.

Over Your Dead Body - latest from Jorma Taccone is an absolute blast. Jason Segel and Samara Weaving go to an isolated cabin with plans to kill each other and that’s as normal as the movie gets. Chaotic comedy that somehow is more gory than Evil Dead. Right up my alley.

I liked the first Ready or Not a lot and I feel like Ready or Not 2 matches the original’s comic energy while expanding the lore in a satisfying way. The new additions to the cast all rock. Bonus points for casting Cronenberg in a pivotal role and for the Wood/Hatosy Faculty reunion.

Embargo seems to be up. Project Hail Mary is the crowd-pleasing, hope-giving, big A-list movie-movie we don’t get much anymore. Scope is massive and the humor is on point, keeping the dire stakes from being overwhelmingly bleak. I’d lie, cheat, steal, kill, and die for Rocky.

Daylight Savings Time not happening during SXSW for once feels like a mini-miracle. Anybody who ever got home at 4am after their midnight movie knows what I’m talking about.

Am I time traveling focus-puller? (If you don’t know what I look like, it’s pretty much this dude working on Spielberg’s TV movie, Savage, except without the rad mutton chops)

Late birthday outing. Being treated like the princess I am.

Both are wild rides and both benefit hugely from not knowing a goddamn thing about them going in.

We lost another titan. Robert Duvall lived a long, prosperous life and left behind a hell of a legacy. Of course there’s his Coppola work, but two roles of his I’ll always think about are Falling Down and The Outfit. Two radically different characters, both equally fascinating.

Grateful for all the happiness this absolute legend gave the world. She’s what my friends and I call a never-bad. To be the best thing in just about everything you’ve been in for 45+ years is incredible. RIP Catherine O’Hara.

Happy birthday to a real one. Miss you, buddy.

What a fucking gut punch it is to hear about Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele. The man made the gold standard of damn near every genre he approached. Coming of age movies all try to measure up to Stand By Me, mockumentaries to Spinal Tap, rom-coms to When Harry Met Sally.

If nothing else The Duffers got this right: Peanut Butter Boppers fucking ruled.

Rest in Peace to the great Drew Struzan, a man whose work sparked the imaginations of a whole generation of movie nerds. The master is gone. I had the privilege of visiting him in his studio once and getting to talk shop. Here’s his words on one of his masterpieces:
