Last night was my ninth time seeing Murder by Death. It was a bittersweet experience as this is their farewell tour. Its been six years since they’ve done a show in Houston and while I’ve always been willing to travel for a show (Colorado, Tennessee, Toronto), it was great to see them back home.

I've not been able to get REALM OF SATAN out of my head since I watched it recently. It's a documentary (kinda?) about the Church of Satan that focuses on the mundanity that comes with worshiping the devil. No talking head interviews, no context - just Satanists doing goofy stuff. It's incredible.

We went to Dolly Parton’s Stampede, which used to be a racist dinner and a show where you rooted on the south in a civil war reenactment but now is a place where you can eat a whole chicken while learning about the birth of Jesus.

Marvel in the ‘70s could be a hotbed of ill-advised story ideas. Take GUNHAWKS, a buddy gunslinger comic about an ex-slave who fought for the confederacy to protect “a way of life” from yankee scum. It’s like if somebody from the south made BLAZING SADDLES.

I find it fascinating to compare the first pages of the first appearances of Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, and fuzzy Hank McCoy. All issues were written or co-written by Gerry Conway. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, I guess. And, to be fair, the actual stories veer in wildly different directions.

I read/loved HELEN OF WYNDHORN by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The comic follows the daughter of a Robert E. Howard-esque pulp writer who learns, after her dad's suicide, that the fantasy worlds he wrote about are real and her grandpa is basically Conan. Beautiful artwork, poignant story - read it!
