I asked this on Mastodon, but it's only fair I ask here too. Since I am told ATProto is decentralized, how do I migrate my account & posts & everything to another service not controlled in any way by Bluesky corp? The only alternative I'm aware of is Blacksky, but are there any others I've missed?

Welp, now blocking the CTO of Bluesky for promoting slopaganda. Folks, if you don't want to spend all your time on a social network being coded by slopagandists and prompt junkies (via “Claude Code” etc.), can I highly recommend joining a *far* better social network? ☺️

No one wants to use AI—we know that this is a technology in search of an actual use or a "killer app," as they used to say in Silicon Valley, that will attract users to their platform. AI finally found their user base: fascist governments. And this time, the killer app actually kills.

Tech companies: We're going to spend billions of dollars on "AI" datacenters. Real people: And our kids can still walk to school safely, right? Tech companies: No. This is the reality of today's U.S. politics. It makes my brain bleed… 😵💫

In 2019, the economic costs of US car crashes totaled $340 billion. This is equivalent to $1,035 for each of the 328 million people living in the US, & 1.6% of the 2019 GDP. Including quality-of-life valuations, the total value of societal harm from motor vehicle crashes was nearly $1.4 trillion.

Because of the National driver register, since their licenses are suspended, trans folks cannot move to another state and get a new license until they remove the suspension on their existing Kansas license. They can't even escape this by moving to another state.

OK. I don't know if this is a Portland thing or a post-COVID thing or a "these days" thing but there's something lacking in cowork culture here. I felt a more vibrant creative indie cowork space culture in bedroom communities of suburban CA mid-2010s than today in Portland. And I can't explain why.

Hey, everybody arguing about if X or if Bluesky is "The Commons" The correct answer is (obviously) *neither*. geez 🙄 Also there are other social networks…! I have way better engagement & convo in the fediverse than here, plus it's all non-profit/hobbyist services. Maybe THAT's the commons! 😁

Um, I can be pissed off at Sam Altman & Tim Cook because of the choices they make. I don't care one iota they are gay. If anything, I am saddened their place in LGBTQ+ hasn't sufficently informed their sense of ethics, but that's a different conversation. I *really* don't care if gay men run SV!

I love the fact that *so* many responses to that terrible "what technology is the left excited about" article are like, we're excited about trains. And solar power. And vaccines. Like, y'know, stuff that actually benefits everyone and also helps the planet and also isn't wretched.

And not just in regard to things, but people. It's important to keep caring. It's important to keep caring about how people work (not just labor), and how we're built (cognitively, emotionally). There is a remarkable lack of care in this age; carelessness at scale. This will not hold. It can't.

Elon is so full of it, he's not even good at being a racist. First of all he misspelled Scots. Second of all, he seems oblivious to how the Irish were discriminated against ("No Irish Need Apply"), as well as how poor classes were often treated badly by their own aristocratic overlords.
