The fact that almost every full time comic artist of my generation (esp the marginalized folk) who lives in North America wants to quit their job and get a 9-5 is so very depressing.

this is a really good point haha. self publishing a graphic novel is NOT a thing the way it is for a prose novel. printing alone is way more fucking expensive. it takes way longer to make. you can't just upload an ebook to Amazon or whatever, there's no distribution. it's just not on the table

If you'd like to help the indie community, support the people over at Comic Fury, Spider Forest, Comic Rocket, Webcomic Library, Webcomic Travelogue, Comix Cleric- and many more. Check out those places for webcomic resources and to keep things creator owned. That was the whole point of webcomics.

All of my basic living expenses were $1200/mo. I kept $100 for fun money, and the rest went into savings. And then that savings was the only thing keeping me afloat for 4 years bc Dark Horse, Oni, and Comixology's advances were nowhere near what Webtoon paid me

I do think the workload and schedules w Webtoon is insane, and it did for sure contribute to my burnout, but I was making ~$2k/mo in 2018 and back then STL had a fairly low cost of living compared to other cities and today's costs

The most stable comic work I had was doing Messenger w Webtoon, the workload was unsustainable for sure but I was paid monthly so I could actually budget well. I even owned a condo at that time, I could not have paid the mortgage if I still lived there when I made my Dark Horse and Oni books

Personally i think comics would be way more sustainable if they just offered like a monthly paycheck or something. But i also think that easy comparison with normal work rates would easier reveal the meager peanuts they pay us. So it probably wont happen

Begging. Pleading. GlobalComics is run by techbros. They keep bringing on more techbros. If you want people to read your comic.. highly advise against GC. Their background is all AI. They implemented (and took away) an AI summary system that folks did not consent to. THEYRE SHADY.

Your labor as an artist matters and you should be compensated fairly. Yes, Iβm aware that publishers arenβt endless money machines, but there is great pay disparity between creators and if we want a more sustainable an equitable comics business, that has to change.

they'll be convenient enemies regardless of what they do, that's playing out in the states right now. you can bend over backwards to appease fascists and it will never work, because their whole ideology is irrational and premised on the idea of purging enemies. they need enemies to function

It's a pyramid scheme where men allow themselves to be exploited and submit to the authority of more powerful men in exchange for getting to exploit those who aren't men. The modern male grievance movement makes the most sense when you see them as outraged over this implicit contract being broken.

A classic anti-masker tactic is to claim that if you don't wear a mask 100% of the time, it isn't worth it. Untrue. Every single time you wear a mask, you reduce the chances for viruses to spread. Wearing a mask always improves public health, even if you only do it occasionally.

It should say a lot that the idea of working a normal job feels like a vacation sometimes. I could be making the same money if not more at some entry level 9-5, not have to deal with the hell of freelance taxes, and not have weekly panic attacks. Its way more consistent too.
