I was very fond of the improper pizzas, deep fried at the chippy opposite our house in Cudeth. Despite my dad's efforts to put me off them, "What's that thar eytin? Looks like a gret big scab..."

I do love all these recipes from the 60's onwards for people second hand ideas of what pizza etc were like. Oh first pizzas were from a packet with scone mix base and a weird gelatinous tomato powdered topping. It's surprising we preserved with them tbh .

I think we can date exactly when proper pizza arrived in Barnsley, when Pinocchio's opened in 1984 . Before that it was just cheese on toast, and the only Olive you'd find in town was that old lass who used to sing at the entrance to the covered market.
