A poem about Dickie Bird by Ian McMillan which he read out on BBC Radio Sheffield earlier today: It's the final over Of the final test And Time is bowling The final ball; And the innings that stretched To 92 Will end just here 'Cos it's umpire's call.

I am saddened to hear about the death of Dickie Bird, one of the country’s finest and most celebrated cricket umpires. A proud Yorkshireman as well as a great cricketer and role model for the sport - I offer my condolences to his friends and family.

God bless Dickie , the most famous person from our village , he used to attend my Dad's church and sit at the back complaining about the choice of hymns (not an uncommon thing for a Methodist ) . But he seemed a good soul. His statue in town is always amusing . Love to his family and friends

When I logged in first thing my fellow early risers were fulminating about Reforms latest hatebait policy. Shortly after that some folk started to complain about the excessive coverage of Reform in the media. I log on this evening and people are still discussing them. I can see a pattern here.

I got a 2-disc special edition of Ratatouille the other day for 20p. It's ridiculously full of genuinely interesting extra features including an interview with Thomas Keller and one of Pixar's featurettes.

What's effectively happening here (in the British media at large, too) is the construction of "anti-racism" as somehow a "political alternative" to racism, rather than as a minimal civilisational standard, which in turn (further) vindicates racism as *also* an acceptable political position.

Found out yesterday that Beefeater buy 50 tonnes of juniper berries every year for gin. The jars in the shop are 28g and hold 40(?) berries, can you imagine how many berries there are in 50 tonnes!

I know this is partly inspired by the recent films but the King Kong story is oddly persistent in the collective imagination. And yes hell knows how this travelling show navigates the whole colonial , orientalism , racism thing. I imagine the giant model of Kong will be pleasing daft & fun though.

I don't know, having easy access to the content of all the books I've read/owned would be useful & interesting. What you then do with the information, ideas, insights is the "thinking" part. But hey that doesn't get you the clicks. We probably need a more nuisanced approach to information systems.
