Why can't us?

My family has been without half our income for 40 days. It has been.. very hard. We are willing to feel that pain so people can have health care next year, or to undo these illegal recissions. We are not willing to have been put through this for NOTHING.

Channeling my inner @jobforphilly.bsky.social - “Why can’t us?” Ljubljana, Slovenia is a pedestrian paradise. It limits car traffic through its city center for most hours of the day. They instead have different evs that roam around offering free rides to those who need a lift.

Such a shame that the recent sanitation strike led to zero reconsideration of this policy, or the practice of doing door-to-door pickups in such a dense city. There is a cleaner, safer, cheaper, more environmentally friendly method waiting for you on your next Mediterranean vacation…

It’s REALLY important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against downtown bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of the evidence that they are better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced. Bike-lanes mean business.

Why can't us? Credit where due: Philadelphia took a good first step this year by eliminating mandates in our biggest commercial/mixed-use categories. But let's just ditch it citywide like everyone else is doing!

Helsinki had no traffic deaths from July '24 thru June '25. Philadelphia had 84 traffic deaths during calendar year '24. Why can't us? A few reasons: -litigation opposing improvements -requirement for street design to be legislated -deference to community groups on safety What else am I missing?

Once again, I find myself inspired by work abroad to make cities cleaner, safer, and ultimately more livable. Why can't us? 🧵 Let's start with the tram that picks you up about 50' from the Nice airport terminal door and runs around every 12 minutes. Open gangway and clear signage. Beautiful station

Notable accounts clinging to their following is part of the problem. When respected voices leave, it weakens the platform’s draw. Staying only props it up. Leaving is a moral stance and I wish more people would act on theirs.

This is a clever and obvious-in-retrospect framing, that should inform every conversation about traffic, urban development, cycling, and transit. If you *must* drive, then do so! Every person *not* driving will have far more positive impact on traffic, than any loss of lanes or parking spaces.
