I’m going to add, because I can’t not, that Strasbourg is based on a settlement dating to *12 AD* and is fine having trams in the old city while Brampton was fretting about having them in its 20th-century “historic downtown“

Really we all should root for a Knicks-Sixers playoff series every year because it’s one of the few matchups where the teams commute back and forth via chartered Amtrak trains instead of chartered flights. Tons of C02 emissions saved (Sixers boarding train pics from 2024)

On Sunday, Philadelphia had equal numbers of homicides and traffic deaths. While the city has seen killings decline by nearly 80% since pandemic-era highs, progress on traffic deaths has been much slower.

And news from Paris: the left should hold on to power, with candidate Emmanuel Grégoire having beaten right-winger Rachida Dati quite big in 1st round, about 37%-25%. He'll likely win the 2nd round. This would mean Paris extending its pro-bike anti-car revolution

Public Comment at Philadelphia City Council has long been problematic, but it has gotten out of hand. My rare hot take: it's time for Philadelphia City Council to revisit Aleksee vs. City Council Of Philadelphia (link below).

Anne Hidalgo's positive impact on Parisian public space has been huge. But the ultimate significance of her leadership on mobility justice is global: demonstrating what is possible really highlights the commitment of other mayors to convenience for car owners at the expense of everyone else.

Honored to receive the 5th Square Advocacy Urbanist Lifetime Achievement Award! Calling it a “lifetime” award in my 40s feels ambitious, but I’ll happily take it as motivation to keep pushing for better cities, better policy, and better outcomes.

My family has been without half our income for 40 days. It has been.. very hard. We are willing to feel that pain so people can have health care next year, or to undo these illegal recissions. We are not willing to have been put through this for NOTHING.

Such a shame that the recent sanitation strike led to zero reconsideration of this policy, or the practice of doing door-to-door pickups in such a dense city. There is a cleaner, safer, cheaper, more environmentally friendly method waiting for you on your next Mediterranean vacation…
