My father shared with my mom that this is partly why he became a chef. He grew up in Germany during WWII and came of working age just after the war. He had 4 brothers and a sister and food was scarce. He said working in a restaurant afforded food for him and to bring leftovers home at times.

True that. I worked as a busboy at a spaghetti house in the 70's. You had to be there 1 hr before opening to do your set-ups but then you could have a free meal. Some folks tired of spaghetti dishes but it was the only hot meal I could afford. Those hot meals kept me going the whole year I was there
