Interesting paper suggesting a mechanism for why in-context learning happens in LLMs. They show that LLMs implicitly apply an internal low-rank weight update adjusted by the context. It’s cheap (due to the low-rank) but effective for adapting the model’s behavior. #MLSky arxiv.org/abs/2507.16003

Great point. Benchmarking has become the name of the game in machine learning. You can effectively add to or subtract from the definition of intelligence by introducing a new benchmark or critiquing an existing one, and convince a significant portion of the community that you have a valid point.

The New York Times piece today about US science is terrible and wrong—in many ways. I could write a whole article about this, but as one example: “To close observers, the original crisis began well before any of this…” No. I’m a close observer of science, and this is incorrect.
