This is one of the most outstanding examples of circuit understanding I've seen in a long time. The unification of theory and experiment is beautiful. When Malcolm presented this in my lab, the audience was cheering at the end, and one person shouted (non-ironically) "You did it!"

What a strange timeline we live in: activists and politicians rail against the value of science, while every day we get wild new discoveries like the simultaneous recording of 600k+ neurons of the mouse brain or ants that give birth to 2 different species.

I think this can be easily explained by two things: 1) As collective memory of horrible diseases fade, it becomes harder to overcome people's instinctive fear of vaccines. 2) Vaccines became a partisan issue during COVID. As with climate change, this prevents rational discourse on the issue.
