I don’t understand why so many Christians demonize other beliefs. The biggest threat to Christianity isn’t Islam or secularism or atheism. The biggest threat to Christianity is loveless, self-serving Christianity.

If the Left Behind guys had written a scene where the antichrist signs copies of the Bible I would have rolled my eyes and said it was too on the nose.

I’ve learned a lot about faith from other Christians. I’ve also learned a lot about faith from Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, and agnostics. If God is everywhere then God is also with everyone.

It’s possible to have empathy without agreement. For example I understand Christian Nationalists fear pluralism, that controlling others makes them feel safe. I can relate to the disorienting feeling of irrelevance, I just disagree with lording over others in the name of Jesus.

I grew up in church, served on church leadership teams most my adult life. In my experience no one is less trustworthy than a pastor who has all the answers, who acts like an expert on the Bible and theology. These people want you to worship them, not the living God.

Growing up evangelical we never observed Ash Wednesday which is a shame because contemplating mortality nurtures humility and a sense of unity with all of humanity, things the church in the U.S. needs desperately.

But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

And if you're not the loud type, now's the time to quietly make shenanigans.

This whole situation with Trump, Talarico, Colbert, and the FCC brings into sharp focus the reality that the authoritarians and fascists want to silence us but they legitimately don’t know how. If you’ve been quiet, now is the perfect time to get loud.

Christians are supposed to prioritize the kingdom of heaven and God’s righteousness. Christian Nationalism prioritizes power on earth and its own self righteousness.

When Jesus said “I have overcome the world” he didn’t mean he overcame women voting or gender ideology or performers speaking Spanish. He was referring to the systems of oppressive power upheld by corrupt humans who rule in a manner that is antithetical to the reign of God.

Some Christians lead with knowledge of the Bible. Some lead with allegiance to a political party. But Jesus would have us lead with love.

Jesus didn’t identify with a political party, but he DID identify with the poor, the marginalized, and the oppressed. That’s why I’m proud to be called a progressive Christian.

I have zero interest in the perspectives of Christians who only use their voices to defend themselves, who never take up the cause of the marginalized and oppressed the way Jesus did.

I’ve heard a lot of maga folks say there’s no proof the president assaulted minors. I haven’t heard any maga folks say he’s not the type of person who would assault minors.

I’d like to unsubscribe from the kind of Christianity that lacks the courage to do the right thing.

God sees what obstructors of justice try to hide in redacted files. God hears the testimonies of survivors whom the unjust try to silence.

If I were the literal devil I would carefully convince Christians that there is something sinister about empathy, that forgiveness is reserved for those who serve my interests, and that love looks like incurious condescension.

Christians, unless you love like Jesus, no one wants to hear your opinions about Christianity. It really is that simple.

The self-proclaimed people of God have always been the ones who try to silence the true prophets of God.

Churches that fail to hold predatory pastors accountable will naturally produce Christians that fail to hold predatory presidents accountable.

I used to be angry @ MAGA Christians but the number of brainwashed believers who’ve convinced themselves the president is some kind of David—now I just feel sorry for them. Their idolatry has made them incapable of critical thinking. It’s a sickness, a maga mind virus if you will.

This morning I preached on Micah 6 to a purple congregation. We have a department of justice, we don’t have a department of mercy. That’s our job, to resist inhumane ICE actions, to bear prophetic witness as we hold our leaders accountable, and to walk humbly with our God.

As a healthcare professional, I feel it’s important to explain that a psychiatric consult tells us next to nothing about a person’s credibility. And it’s pretty par for the course for someone who has been through trauma, being trafficked for example.
