It’s not just in Sweden where we see schools moving away from so much technology use in public schools. Several local school districts in Maryland are emphasizing handwriting and limiting smartphone use. Some of this is in direct response to AI being used in ways that undermines learning.

Several of my articles are here (from ELT Journal, ReCALL and Applied Linguistics) along with the entire Handbook Carol Chapelle and I edited. I have searched for a number of other colleagues' publications and they are there as well. I AM PISSED! I have added my name to this list.

Indeed. Back in December 2022 I wrote this, in a piece for the Boston Globe. I think we're still getting it backwards: We keep trying to solve the problem of how to use AI rather than asking what problems using AI might solve. And the problem isn't writing more student papers faster.

This is a theme I address in my Anti-Acknowledgement about the challenges I'm facing in finishing my book. It's a good illustration of how fanfic and fan adjacent work about the Harry Potter series continues to divide fans and fandom in the face of its author's anti-trans bigotry.

I feel this in my bones. I spent a good part of the Spring term educating myself on AI and critical AI because I am a teacher educator and my students need to guidance in this. But I resent that it took so much time away from writing my book on fan practices for language learning and teaching. 😑
