Likewise, study alone won't help because there's lots that studying won't teach you either. Textbooks are great for giving you general knowledge and a good understanding and use of grammar, but there's a lot of esoteric information in media. You really need both to excel at Japanese.

I think immersion can help you learn Japanese, but I don't think immersion alone can give you a strong understanding of the language. I've seen multiple people who live in Japan and have studied through immersion only to have massive holes in their knowledge, and struggle to communicate at times.
