The lack of accountability the SPEED Act would enable—championed by fossil fuels & Abundance folk alike—is exacerbated, ironically, by the fact that it would legislatively preclude the use of NEPA to substantively demand better outcomes in the public interest! WTF?

Frankly, the energy wonk crowd continues to do this, as we've seen with "permitting reform" debates where a tacit alliance btw/developer-centered energy wonks (i.e., Abundance) is now aligned with the fossil fuel industry in a battle with the progressive left climate & environmental community.

I think this is a function of the energy wonk crowd viewing issues through a narrow economic & engineering lens that renders them oblivious to linkages between Trump's racism, fossil fuel ideology, authoritarian, etc. & how that plays in the necessarily intersectional climate & ecological arena.

This rings (generally) true in energy wonk circles—thinking, in particular, about various folks pleased with Trump's nomination of folks like DOE Secretary Chris Wright and DOI Secretary Doug Burgum—but it's very much not true in progressive climate & environmental NGO circles.

Biden & Harris were already speeding up permitting -- not by slashing regulations or imposing arbitrary timelines, but by fully funding & staffing the offices involved.

The SPEED Act is a gift to fossil fuels. It will obstruct the U.S. energy transition. It is designed to further Trump's "Energy Dominance" agenda and hamstring the ability of future administration's to address the climate crisis.

I talked to Al Gore about Bill Gates's climate change memo. He called it "manifestly absurd" and questioned Gates's true motives for releasing it. "He has a lot of irons in the fire with whoever is in power."

The Manchin-Barrasso "permitting reform" bill was a Trojan Horse populated with fossil fuel concessions that would've boosted LNG exports & forced offshore & onshore O&G leasing across hundreds of millions of acres of public lands and waters. It was a shitty, failed compromise. I'm glad it died.

“Permitting reform,” in the 119th Congress should be defeated, not negotiated. The political conditions are far too fraught & far too many Democrats are frankly feckless or entirely bought into energy industry & Big Tech interests, not the public interest. People, we gotta organize & fight.
